Mrs. Lana Mays

Hello!  I am Mrs. Mays, the new K-3 General Music Teacher at North Side School and 4th-8th Vocal Music Teacher at Center Street School. Singing and playing music has been a passion for me since I was about 10 years old.  I enjoyed participating in many vocal and instrumetnal music contests, as well as Band and Choir, while I was a student at West Salem Grade School and Edwards County High School.

I studied Vocal Music Education at both the University of Evansville in Evansville, Indiana, and Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.  I studied Voice with Dr. Joan Metelli at Ball State and participated in various choirs and Opera Workshops.  I graduated from BSU in 1994.

I did my student teaching at Pendleton Heights Middle School, in Pendleton, Indiana, which led to a teaching position with South Madison Schools as a K-6 Music Teacher at East Elementary.  Four years later the corporation built a new elementary, and I helped open the brand new Maple Ridge Elementary, where I continued to teach for fifteen years. As a teacher in South Madison, I produced Fall, Holiday, Veteran and Spring concerts and musicals.  I also sponsored students who participated in the Indiana All-State Elementary Honor Choir.

In 2003 I began my journey through the world of Orff-Schulwerk at Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana.  Orff-Schulwerk operates with four parts: Sing, Say, Dance and Play.  I completed my Level III Certification in 2005.

I live in West Salem with my husband, Stan, who is a System Administrator in IT at the Indianapolis Airport, and our daughter who is a Sophomore at Edwards County High School.
